Lee Cooper 1908-2008: 100 Years Of Fine English Denim

Posted on 18 July 2008

Lee Cooper celebrates its centenary by announcing ‘The biggest denim project, ever!’ To celebrate its centennial anniversary, Lee Cooper came up with a fantastic, dream project, the Project 100.  It was the occasion for the British brand to collaborate with some of the world’s most respected designers, celebrities, sporting heroes and iconic brands including Giles Deacon, Jade Jagger, Alain Mikli, Ora Ito, Linford Christie, Jean Claude Jitrois, Paco Rabane and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac who we previewed here.

The Lee Cooper Project gave birth to 100 eclectic and exclusive products from Braille t-shirts to replica copies of vintage army pants – all different, according to the signature styles and inspiration of the artists involved. Lee Cooper also decided that the Project100 would be about sharing and the 100 years pieces will be auctioned for the Red Cross at the respected Paris auction house, Drouot Montaigne, this autumn. The auction house will also exhibit the collection 3 days prior to the event.

We have a look at the piece Toxic put togethe rfor the project "I had been thinking for some time to use jeans in my work and Lee Cooper’s 100 Project was the perfect occasion to give it a go."  Toxic’s piece is a painting based on silk screened patterns of vintage Lee Cooper jeans and jacket. He painted one side of the jeans and the pattern was silk screened on the back. Toxic’s concept was that once the owner of the art piece would get tired of it, he would be able to turn it into a pair of jeans and matching jacket by cutting the pattern. A bold and unique way of wearing art! The designs are a continuation of the abstract turn that Toxic’s work has taken in the past few years, and it is with a great excitement that he and Lee Cooper are unveiling this piece.
