Ed Wood’s ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’ Set For Re-Make

Posted on 29 May 2008

Ed Wood’s legendarily terrible sci-fi horror opus, Plan 9 from Outer Space, has had a remake greenlit.

Working to the spookular release date of 9/9/09, self-proclaimed "Cult film Madman" John Johnson promises to utilise 21st century technology to make good on Wood’s original vision of terror and "character- driven" sci-fi: making the film Wood have made if the director was not "bound by the technological limitations placed on filmmakers 50 years ago".

It’s not clear at this stage whether the new film’s technology will actually reanimate the dead (Plan 9’s biggest name-actor, Bela Lugosi, famously died halfway through the shoot) and fix atrocious dialogue ("Your stupid minds! Stupid! Stupid!"), or just generate subpar CG.

Johnson says of Wood, "Even if Eddie was a little off in his filmmaking skills, you cannot deny his passion". This is rich, given that Wood at least had films released in theatres, whereas Johnson’s ouevre consists entirely of direct-to-video horrors whose highest praise on IMDB is, "I really enjoyed the perfectly animated credits".
