Futura has gained notoriety globally as a respected designer and notable gallery artist for his abstract style approach to graffiti that has spanned a few different generations of street artists. He started graffiti painting in the 1970’s in New York City’s subway illegally. While the primary focus, during the 1980s, of the majority of graffiti artists was lettering, Futura pioneered abstract artworks, which has since become more popular. Conversely, his aerosol strokes are regarded as different from those of his peers, as they are as thin as the fine lines achieved only through the use of an airbrush.
Futura later has worked alongside James Lavelle and Ben Drury, to produce the artwork for several releases on Mo’ Wax records, making his Point Man and Atomic Ring art iconic and legendary. Recently much of Futura’s artwork is channeled towards the production of highly collectible toys, sneakers, and a diverse range of creative media. He has been working with Recon, Nike, North Face, Medicom Toy, Undercover, Supreme, Levi’s, and A Bathing Ape. Futura Laboratories is an apparel design company founded by Futura himself in Fukuoka, Japan, which is extremely successful in terms of releasing exclusive collaborations with many other influential brands.
