Carlo Crivelli was born in Venice around 1435.
All of his surviving paintings are of religious subjects.
His style was highly individual, with a strong element of Late Gothic fantasy.
He used raised plaster to give a three-dimensional effect to details such as drops of Christ's blood or the tears of mourners.
There aren't many books available on Crivelli, Ronald Lightbrown did the definitive monograph a few years back, published by Yale University Press.
If you have a spare £80, I stronly recommend you track it down.
