Last night the windows that Chris Ofili designed for the Stephen Lawrence Centre were smashed in a pathetic and obvioulsy racist attack. The Centre only opened last week and is there to expand opportunities to socially disadvantaged youth in London. In Doreen, Steven's mums words; "So while Stephen was tragically prevented from fulfilling his dream of becoming an architect, many other young people living in poverty will be empowered, through the Trust's work, to rediscover and fulfil their dreams. They will become the architects and urban designers of the future - in the UK, in Jamaica and in South Africa. This is Stephen's legacy, and when we look at what the Trust has achieved in Stephen's memory, my family and I feel extremely proud. At the same time, the opening of the Centre inspires us to continue and develop the Trust's valuable work"

Stephen was 18 and studying to be an architect when he was murdered waiting for a bus in Eltham, South east London. Although there were witnesses to the attack the suspects have never been convicted. There is new hope that scientific breakthroughs can lead to a conviction. Maybe this bullshit event will at least help to keep that fight alive.
