The most sought-after painter in northern Europe during the seventeenth century, Peter Paul Rubens, was also a diplomat, linguist, and all round genius. His dynamic, emotional style with its rich texture, vivid color, and lively movement has influenced Western art to the present day.  in 2002 his painting 'Massacre of the Innocents' sold at auction of $76.2million, holding the record for the most expensive work by an 'old master' .
