CAN & Holger . . .

Posted by Shawn Mortensen on January 01, 2008 6:03 AM | Email

I am a massive KRAUTROCK fan ... once ya READ Julian Cope's KRAUTROCKSAMPLER {1996HEAD HERITAGE} the DEFINITIVE BOOK & start to buy the records described YOU WILL BE HOOKED ! ! ! CAN are one of my favorite BANDS EVER ! Holger went on later to Score many European films. I just found this record MOVIES, his 1st record post-CAN. I've also written a screenplay about the German Avant Guard Scene in the late 60s & 70s. It's called KRAUTROCK.

KRAUTROCK bands like Kraftwerk & CAN & FAUST inspired early PUNK ROCK groups like the SEX PISTOLS, The CLASH & David Bowies "BERLIN Trilogy" ;Changes, HEROES, & LODGER are ALL said to have been INSPIRED by BOWIE & ENO's OBSESSION with KRAUTROCK !!! Iggy Pop's The IDIOT was reorded in germany & influenced as well. We wouldn't have TECHNO or EVEN Early Hip Hop without KRAUTROCK ! The TalkingHeads work with ENO seems notably influenced as well . In fact VIRGIN Records began selling their 1st records with KRAUTROCK acts like FAUST & their low price point & trippy covers caught the attention of London's PUNK Class of 1977 - BEFORE 'PUNK" was born !

Afrika Bambaatta sampled Kraftwerk's Trans-Europe Express for PLANET ROCK , which is considered one of the 1st Hip Hop recordings & a Classic.

CAN were known for their experimentation with what is now called WORLD MUSIC ... before anyone else was they incorporated indigenous music, Iranian singers, things taped from short-wave radio & sampling. John Lydon was invited to join CAN as a singer when he left the SEX PISTOLS, but formed Public Image Ltd - which was HEAVILY influenced by CAN & KRAUTROCK ideas. Contemporary musicians like Beastie Boys, PAVEMENT, Radiohead, SONIC YOUTH, BECK, STEREOLAB, Massive Attack, Cornelius, & AIR have cited the genre as an influence. My research tells me that, were it not for the German Music Scene of the late 60s &early 70s ... Techno, Electronica, Punk Rock, & other alternatives to Classic Rock may never have emerged. The pages pasted above are excerpts from Julian Cope's KRAUTROCKSAMPLER = a MUCH SOUGHT AFTER Collector's Item = THANKS to J.Cope - MANY of these MINDBLOWING BANDS & ALBUMS are now available on CD ! OtherMusic in NYC has a whole section & Amoeba in LA & SF also carries MUCH of the Landmark records. My favorite beside those pictures are  Amon Duhl 2's WOLF CITY, GURU GURU's Hinten, NEU! 's NEU!, EVERY Kraftwerk, & EVERY FAUST recording. The Brit Music Press like NME named it KRAUTROCK, but in Germany it was called KOSMISCHE MUSIC {COSMIC MUSIC}. It's Utopian & SUPER TRIPPY EXPERIMENTAL !!! Even Timothy Leary made a KR album with the band ASHRA TEMPLE titled 7UP !

From 1st hand experience - I KNOW that MANY of my friends Globally are KRAUTROCK FANATICS : Jun Takahashi of UNDERCOVER named his collection last year GURU GURU in homage to the EPIC band ; Nobu of HYSTERIC GLAMOUR has an astounding collection ; LA's Chinatown Gallery & art boutique OOGA BOOGA is also named after a GURU GURU song ! RAF SIMONS has alluded to the bands in bags he did years ago ... In closing let me say that KRAFTWERK are my ALL TIME FAVORITE concert ! It was ASTOUNDING how broad the crowd was who attended at the Hollywood Palladium in 1998 : Cholos, Ravers, Hip Hop Heads, former PUNKERS, etc ... just THE BROADEST  SPECTRUM of PEOPLE I've EVER SEEN at a concert ! ! !      ADD A COMMENT if you have been INSPIRED . . .
