I am currently in Whistler, Canada for the opening of the BRAVE ART
exhibition and to make a livePaint for the opening reception.
The exhibition launched in 2005 to show a fresh mix of art fused
with the culture of street and boards sports.Exposing artists to an
audience who may have already experienced there works through
clothing, sneaker collaborations, skate and snowboard graphics
and modern pop culture.Director Darrin Polischuk says 'Brave Art is
a portal between emerging street arts and the public' . To make
this point this fourth show has put together a diverse artists line up
from many countries and features two livepaint programmes.
Darrin points out the importance of the livepainting aspect saying
'many people want to feel a special connection to a piece when they
are making an investment in art, and the experience of seeing a livepaint
can really establish that connection with the artists and there methodology'
The 10,000 sq ft show has a pretty broad arc, but the context is really sound and the show is extremely well produced.
Whistler itself is basically a mini town, Burton, NIke even Aveda all have ownbrand strores here and from someone who previously
directed my streetwear design ideals from an urban (did i just say that?) ideology
it was a real eye opener to see branded and technical apparel
from an action sports user perspective. In this context , the exhibition made total sense. The opening was very busy and the red dots started appearing early, so i guess the formula works and as a brand the show could easily be transported to more familiar metropiltan territory, lets hope it does.
Some work i liked....
