DJ Knowhow - Straatwaarde

Posted by Patta on October 04, 2007 11:11 PM | Email

My mentor and friend DJ Knowhow is a pioneering and influential figure in Dutch Hip Hop and culture, paving the way for many DJ's and producers (including myself) and the current generation of Hip Hop artists as well. Knowhow developed his own style at clubs and school parties, moved on to producing and performing alongside Rudeboy Remmington (Urban Dance Squad) and DJ Allstar Fresh, and continued pushing Dutch Hip Hop to new plateaus as a member of The Dutch Masters collective and the Villa 65 national radioshow, making DJ Knowhow a household name. He guided successful Dutch artists such as Extince and Brainpower early on in their careers, and also produced a grip of headnod material by said artists, and more recently, EPMD and Keith Murray.

We used to spend countless hours cruising in the blue Civic at night listening to beats, and as long as I can remember, he always had ideas and visions to produce a "producers" album in a similar vein as say, Marley Marl's "In Control" or Pete Rock's "Soul Survivor". However, due to various situations and circumstances those plans never came to fruition... until now that is.

For "Straatwaarde" Knowhow served up 12 joints (14 minus intro and outro), a compact and cohesive (he's a DJ, afterall) dish featuring various Dutch artists ranging from up-and-coming mc's to seasoned veterans to stylish vocalists on Knowhow's carefully crafted boom bap arrangements. Every single song is taylormade for the featured artist(s) and showcases Knowhow's production skill, versatility and will to take risks: I mean, nobody in his right mind would even really try to touch D'Angelo's classic jawn "Brown Sugar" or even more surprisingly, Cindy Lauper's chart topping "True Colors". But somehow someway, Knowhow makes it work. Special shout to Complex who BLACKS OUT on "Kronieken van de Straat"!
