INSA IN GLESGA!

Posted by Bothan Spynet on January 22, 2008 9:12 PM | Email

The Recoat Gallery opened in July 2007 and has executed 6 popular, high quality, month long exhibitions, including showing work from Anna King, SuzyQ, Lucy MacLeod, Bernie Reid, Andrew Rae and Kirsty Whiten. They show work from homegrown Scottish emerging and established artists aswell as bringing inspirational artists and designers to Scotland. The young couple, Amy Whiten and Alistair Wyllie, set up the independent space to exhibit graphic art, illustration, street art, graffiti and photography, work from an emerging art scene that has been dubbed as “Contemporary Urban”. The couple has invited a young London-based artist to exhibit with them for their 7th exhibition, who goes under his graffiti tag name, INSA. His show will begin with a Private View on Valentines Day evening, and so takes the title “Buy My Love”, a word play on the themes that inform his work; “My aim is to create beautiful objects of desire in order to explore the relationship between sex, commodity and art. I want to show how our longing for products, material objects and even artworks themselves can be sexual, almost fetishistic”. INSA is a major player in the London Graffiti scene, well known worldwide for his technical spray-can abilities aswell as his iconic posters of abstract ladies’ legs in fetish heels. He was featured on the cover of Graphotism in issue 37, aswell as the centerfold of our very own Scottish Graffiti magazine, Skinnycap, in their latest issue. But INSA is more than a Graffiti Artist. Since graduating from Goldsmiths College of Art in 2001, he has developed the themes within his work. He depicts fashionable, iconic images and objects that modern society craves and obsesses over, alongside the objects commonly associated with fetish, to encourage the viewer to critically appraise what arouses and excites them. He not only makes aesthetic, well crafted pieces of art that have value in their own right, but also weaves layers of critical meaning within each piece, challenging the viewer and particularly the sub-cultures he subscribes to. Within his work he expresses the confusion of a generation who have grown up bombarded with brands, products and sex. INSA is a rising star in the graphic art, product, graffiti, and design worlds, having already exhibited in London, New York and LA, undertaken private commissions from NIKE and Carhartt and worked on product collaborations with Kangol, Oki-Ni and Kid Robot. His work is highly collectable, so this exhibition should not be missed as INSA is producing limited edition prints on stretched PVC exclusively for Recoat. Not only this, but INSA will be giving a free limited edition “Buy My Love” T-shirt to the first 20 people through the door at the opening on the 15th of February at 7pm. Plus due to themes within his work and the kind sponsorship from ‘Violate’, the first 10 people to arrive in full fetish outfits will win tickets and year long memberships to the club night. The exhibition will consist of limited edition prints, original paintings and a mural by INSA within the space. The exhibition opens to the public on the 15th of February 2008 and runs for a month. http://www.insaland.com/ http://www.recoatdesign.com/ PEACE TO AMY AND ALI!
