Mifsud stuns Red Devils
Sky Blues secure Carling Cup upset
Manchester United suffered a second Carling Cup upset in successive seasons following a shock 2-0 defeat to Coventry at Old Trafford.
Southend upset Sir Alex Ferguson's troops last year and now the Sky Blues have knocked out the Premier League champions courtesy of Michael Mifsud's fine brace.
Coventry made a bright start to the contest although the home side had the first sight of goal when Anderson tried his luck from distance after Andy Marshall hurried out to close down Dong Fangzhou.
The game was going from end to end with Leon Best lashing over for the visitors before Chris Martin saw his deflected effort bounce wide after collecting Anderson's blocked shot.
Iain Dowie's side turned the screw just before the half hour mark with Michael Mifsud sliding the ball home past Tomasz Kuszczak from Michael Doyle's fine low cross.
One nearly became two shortly after when the lively Mifsud saw his neat touch in the middle result in Robbie Simpson's right-wing cross striking the far post.
Ferguson's half-time team-talk failed to rouse his charges.
