Blogging is a phenomenom! Its a medium thats very much become a creditable source of information for mainstream media and the world at large, in becoming such an influential phenomenom or movement, this has lead to people wanting to use blogs as a tool to promote or exercise their own endevours, probably not what blogs were initially meant for, and certainly not the best use of the medium, this isn't to say it can't be an effective tool in achieving this goal, and even an informative or entertaining media, be it inadvertently. Having an effective blog can be of enormous benefit to yourself personally as a means to self promote, to your company, brand or movement, but, only when done well. Without a shadow of a doubt, a blog is best when you can see the bloggers genuine passion in their content, that they have taken the time to create content, whether that be, text, images, video or a combination, the fact that what they talk about is close to their heart, and they have made an effort is more than enough to make their blog successful in creating a following and better still marketing your brand/self. There is no point in blogging for the mere sake of having a blog, or as a tool to advertise flyers an events etc. If you want to blog, take the time, and do it properly.
The reason I'm writing this blog, is that I am becoming increasingly dissapointed in the majority of blogs within street culture especially, when scouring other blogs within other cultures and niche's you'll find an amazing amount of effort and dedication, you just don't see that in our culture. There are exceptions of course, there are blogs here at Slam X Hype, which are amazingly good, and are even examples I use when advising people on what makes a good blog, but there are also some terrible ones, which are of no use to anyone, the small effort made by the blogger is barely worth it.. This is the same at my other site, The Wire, the same on Riottt, the same on 12oz, even the same on Honeyee. I guarantee you, your blog will not help you if it's not done properly. One of the most dissapointing side of this, is that I know very well how opinionated, articulate, and just how interesting many members of our culture are, and how capable they are of having amazing blogs, blogs worth acclaim and regular reading, blogs capable of bringing the credibilty of streetwear and its culture to a new level, and yet, on a whole this just doesn't exist.
My proposal is that WE ALL step up! We take 20mins a day to put together a piece on your thoughts for the day, a topical discussion, an interesting moment you've had today, how about interview a friend of yours who's doing something newsworthy, document a moment in history, share your knowledge... Lets step up and get noticed! I'm going to make a concerted effort to do this myself on my blog here, to show it doesn't take much to do it well, I'm just as busy as anyone else, if not more. If you want to blog to help spread the word, create a movement, even promote yourself, then make an effort, or it just won't work! The time is now!
The best blogs are those that have drive and purpose behind them, are consistent and show effort and passion, whatever your purpose, these are all factors just as important.
(When I refer to blogs, I am referring to personal blogs, not the news page of street culture sites, they have completely different purposes)
