Interesting article in the NY Times Magazine about peoples ongoing fascination with Warhol. I was thinking this morning of how strong the media can depict our views on life and culture, the way that journalists have so much control over the news filtered to people, leaving in actual fact very little allowance for us to make up our own minds in the safety of knowing we have all the facts on hand. I think this even happens in Streetwear, as far as news is concerned, more or less, you are destined to the opinions of either myself, Kevin, or David, as an example, luckily we all have quite different tastes, but at the end of the day the way news in the streetwear world works, is that it gets press if we think it deserves it.. kinda unfair in a way, but at the same time, this is the only way... we couldn't possibly post everything, it would be unfair to peer brands who work out and achieve well with others, and to be honest we used to try to present as much news as possible and its just too much work, and you begin to lose your own integrity and credibilty, we used to post things on Slam, that theres no way on earth I would personally vouch for, you can only imagine how this made me feel?! This argument runs every which way, and also goes into much greater detail and has many more facets. I am still confused after some time of readjusting the content here of how some people see streetwear/streetfashion/streetculture..whateever you want to call it.. and I'm even more bemused as to why some people simply see their view and taste as the 'right' one.. I don't think this about myself at all...infact there are so many aspects of streetwear that deserve attention, but just like any good restaurant its best not to attempt to cater to everyone at once.. certain brands vent from an urban dialogue and thats just not me, and on and on..there are placements within our media for all. its just a case of finding the right one, as we all grow and develop our own niche.
Bringing this back to Warhol, I've said it before, but again, with this article in my mind, have strong curiosities of how people view this man, I've read numerous books on him, and am beginning to fear I've perhaps been sent down the wrong path for the reason i state above, to my knowledge, i thought he was a strongly fashion and image driven person who was all about popularity and appearance, something which alot of people in streetwear persist they are the opposite, where as so many speak of how much of an icon Warhol was to them..
I'll be honest, Warhol is an idol of mine, I am fairly appearance and image driven, and while i wouldn't want to live my life the way he does, i often take inspiration from the way people look and the aesthetic they portray, shallow? maybe..and perhaps i am different to most.. but this makes me feel as though i have a valid cause to feel inspired by Warhol, along with other reasons..
As I said, perhaps i have the wrong idea?
I posted the latest colab by Kiks Tyo this week with Champion, Kiks Tyo isn't something we'd normally post here, as the sneaker inspired graphics and the following the brand attracts stray's too far from my personal likes..however i genuinley thought this colab was cool.. mixing the authentic sportswear of Champion with a new aesthetic of bold simple colours. it worked really well.. the branding was minimal and the entire feel subtle. And yet.. as is the way here at Slam these days, this post attracted a barrage of disapproving comments,... I'm normally the first to admit that I'll take brand association too far and am not willing to look past branding to see a good product, but in this case i was quite proud of my willingness to see through and in turn it was some of our readers who failed to see through..
Anti-Hype is the new Hype.. we all know that..but heres a question for you.. if Warhol was around today, or even better, if Warhol was from within street culture and around today, what would he be into, what would he be wearing, what kinda art would he be producing, if any, i have my opinions.. and many of you would consider the brands he would wear to have elitist tendancies or even worse.. many of you would hate on the person he was, but then again didnt he get hated on back then too?
Just a thought... but as i say.. i could be completley wrong and i blame the media if thats the case haha
