Japan’s N. Hoolywood have teamed up with Dazed & Confused Japan to produce this special boxed set containing a tee, three tee transfers and a catalogue in the form of a mock American tabloid newspaper.
N. Hoolywood has attracted a lot of attention this year on the back of its ‘After Sputnik’ 2008 S/S collection. Featuring bold 60’s space-age prints and stark retro-futurist uniforms and space suits, its inspiration came from the sterile, TV-dinner dreams of America’s postwar consumer utopia.
This box set accompanies N Hoolywood’s new ‘08-’09 A/W ‘Daily Life Truth’ range, which was inspired by Harkey Pekar’s ‘American Splendor’ series. The tabloid newspaper relates to our fascination with the miniscule trivia and mundane trials and frustrations of everyday life, which are ongoing themes in Pekar’s work.
N. Hoolywood’s creator Daisuke Obana (who refers to himself as ‘Mister Hollywood’, as per the newspaper headline), begins each season by traveling to California and trawling through Hollywoods thrift and vintage stores. Hence N. Hoolywood, despite its clean aesthetic and immaculate tailoring, has an ominously musty, faded American Gothic feel to it.
With the convergence of streetwear and more tailored high-fashion, N. Hoolywood’s a label we’re certainly be hearing more of. (The exquisite N. Hoolywood boutique is also worth visiting if you’re ever in Japan. Take a video tour of it here).
The box set is available widely throughout Japan in bookstores for about $20, or online at Amazon Japan. Thanks to Secretbase for the news.
