The Art of Emory Douglas at MoCA / Babylon Falling

Posted by K Moto on January 23, 2008 5:13 PM | Email

Supertouch have posted some of the stunning art of Emory Douglas, one time Black Panther party Minister for Culture, which is currently being exhibited  at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (show runs until February 24th). Check it out here. Not only is Douglas' work a precursor to 'street' art, in style and in the way it disrupted the bland neutrality of public space, it also catalogued the spirit of an entire era. This is conviction art. Simple, bold and purposeful.

If you're in the Bay Area you can hear Douglas discuss his art and its political context at Babylon Falling at 7pm on February 8th. Hit the link for more details. Also speaking will be Richard Brown, discussing the struggle of the SF8.
